WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Medical scheme

An insurance against sickness, medical conditions, treatment and medication – irrespective of cost, but based on limits and according to medical schemes tariffs.

Medical schemes are obligated to accept applicants, but are able to impose either of the following terms from commencement:

  • Exclusion for cover for certain pre–existing conditions for 12 months; and / or impose a
  • Late Joiner Penalty, based on the number of previous years that you have not been a continuous member of a medical scheme after the age of 35:
    0–4 years 5%
    5–14 years 25%
    15–24 years 50%
    >25 years 75%

Health insurance

These plans are generally affordable and provide limited benefits when compared to medical schemes. There are variations on options:

Hospital plans

Generally covering defined major medical benefits and hospitalisation based on certain limits and / or daily amounts irrespective of the actual costs involved

Day-to-day cover

To provide for limited consultations to a general practitioner via a network of professionals

Day-to-day cover with hospital benefits

A combination of both the above as certain hospital benefits can be included

Cash back plans

A set daily amount payable per day following admission to hospitals, generally from day 4 onwards

Gap Cover

To cater for a potential shortfall in the payments of benefits from a medical scheme following hospitalisation for a procedure
